The only things I'm not sure of in this adaptation is where exactly does Nemo come from, where is this island suppose to be? why are there prisoners there? which wars does Nemo refer to?.the backstory isn't very clear. That's about it really, Nemo dislikes landlubbers, the people from this island oh and they killed his wife and child too when trying to unlock the secrets of his work. Nemo thusly spends his time sinking ships that leave that island mainly because they carry arms and ammo for war. The main angle is Nemo used to be a prisoner on the island penal colony or 'Rura Penthe' (Star Trek!!) and managed to escape with fellow prisoners whom now make up his crew. The plot is actually kinda loose really, there isn't really any definitive plan or agenda here, its merely Nemo cruising the ocean depths enjoying his freedom from civilisation. I can also go further and say this is probably the best live action Disney film ever as well, in the top five for sure. Thanks to them, the movie could keep a certain charm and nowadays, it lets itself watch with pleasure.Probably the best adaptation of Jules Verne's classic undersea tale ever made, with probably the best casting and performance of 'Captain Nemo' ever also. No matter that the movie was launched in 1954, the special effects aren't antiquated. Then, Paul Lukas and especially Peter Lorre are outstanding. But in parallel, Douglas makes his character funny and likeable. It's probably true if you study his character of Ned Land. As for Kirk Douglas, well he said once: "I've made a career of playing sons of bitches". James Mason is an unforgettable captain Nemo. Of course, the movie is supported by a dazzling performance. In this way, Jules Verne's novel introduces a reflection about man and the extension of his power thanks to the machine (the Nautilus). Moreover, he regards himself as a sort of governor of the ocean. You can describe him as a despotic man who's got a grudge against the earth that made him suffer. This sadistic side is epitomized by the captain Nemo himself. But the movie also includes a sadistic side. Fleischer introduced humor in a few sequences and especially in dialogs.

This is an excellent adventure movie told with quite a lot of humor. Very simply, Richard Fleischer made a gorgeous adaptation of Jules Verne's famous novel.
